For many people living with disability, assistive technology (AT) plays a crucial role in everyday life. Whether it’s a shower chair, mobility scooter, or adjustable bed, the right AT can enhance safety, independence, and confidence. But navigating the NDIS funding process for AT can be confusing—and that’s where occupational therapists come in.

At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we support clients across Shoalhaven and Illawarra to assess, trial, and apply for assistive technology that matches their goals and needs. Here’s how the process works—and how we help every step of the way.

What Is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology includes any device, equipment, or system that supports a person to do things more safely, easily, or independently.

Examples of AT funded by the NDIS include:

  • Daily living aids: long-handled sponges, shower chairs, over-toilet frames

  • Mobility supports: manual or powered wheelchairs, scooters, walking frames

  • Home equipment: pressure care cushions, electric lift recliners, adjustable beds

  • Transfer aids: hoists, slide boards, bed sticks, and grab rails

  • Communication tools: iPads with communication apps, switches, AAC systems

NDIS participants may be eligible for low-cost, mid-cost, or high-cost AT—each requiring different levels of documentation.

How Occupational Therapists Support the AT Process

Occupational therapists are responsible for assessing your needs, recommending the right equipment, and preparing the supporting documentation required by the NDIS.

Here’s how we help:

  1. AT Assessment

We start with an assessment to understand your goals, current challenges, and physical environment. We observe tasks like showering, moving around the home, or transferring in and out of a chair to determine what supports are needed.

  1. Trialing Equipment

Our team arranges equipment trials with trusted local suppliers. We may trial multiple options to find the best fit and gather data on safety, comfort, and function.

  1. Gathering Supporting Evidence

We complete detailed reports to accompany funding requests. This includes:

  • Functional capacity assessments

  • Justification for the chosen item

  • Quotes and supplier information

  • Risk assessments and photos (if needed)

We tailor each report to meet NDIS guidelines—giving your request the best chance of approval.

  1. Liaising with Your Support Team

We work with support coordinators, plan managers, families, and suppliers to ensure a smooth, transparent process from start to finish.

Types of Equipment We Commonly Prescribe

In Shoalhaven and Illawarra, we frequently support funding applications for:

  • Shower commodes and bathroom equipment

  • Electric adjustable beds and pressure-relieving mattresses

  • Manual and powered wheelchairs

  • Lift recliner chairs

  • Transfer benches and hoists

  • Custom AT solutions for rural clients and unique home setups

We also collaborate with local builders and home modification teams when needed.

NDIS Funding Pathways for AT

Depending on the cost and complexity of the item, NDIS funding may be requested via:

  • Low-cost AT: <$1500, often purchased without a full report (we can help guide selections)

  • Mid-cost AT: $1500–$15,000, typically requires an OT assessment and quote

  • High-cost or complex AT: >$15,000, requires a detailed report, risk assessment, and trial data

We’ll help you identify what’s required and make the process as clear and straightforward as possible.

Our experienced occupational therapists provide AT support in:
