Earlier this month, our occupational therapy team had the fantastic opportunity to attend a professional development day at Independent Living Specialists (ILS) in Wollongong, focused on the assessment and prescription of mobility scooters.

The training provided our therapists with valuable hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge about the latest scooter models, their features, and how to tailor scooter recommendations to meet individual client needs. From understanding terrain compatibility to battery range, turning radius, and transportability, we explored all the key factors that contribute to safe and effective scooter use.

At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we know that the prescription of assistive technology—like mobility scooters—isn’t just about mobility. It’s about enhancing independence, promoting community access, and ensuring our clients can safely participate in everyday life. That’s why comprehensive assessment and professional prescription is essential.

Mobility scooters may seem simple to operate, but there’s a lot to consider. Every person’s environment, physical condition, and daily needs are different. An incorrectly prescribed scooter can pose risks such as falls, collisions, or overexertion, and can limit a person’s ability to safely access their community.

Our therapists are trained to assess:

  • Physical capacity (strength, endurance, balance)

  • Vision and cognitive ability

  • Environmental access and terrain

  • Transport and storage needs

  • Seating, posture, and comfort

  • Safety features and controls

The day at ILS reinforced our commitment to evidence-based practice and client-centred care. We’re grateful to the team at ILS for hosting such an informative and practical session.

If you or someone you care for is considering a mobility scooter, speak to one of our occupational therapists for a tailored assessment. We’re here to help you find the right fit for your lifestyle, safely and confidently.
