Many people are at risk of having a fall as they get older. Things that can increase your risk of falls include:
Medications (we suggest having your medications reviewed regularly by your GP)
Eyesight (we suggest having regular vision checks with your optometrist)
Poor mobility and balance
Environmental hazards[1]
Some top tips from our Principal Occupational Therapist Claire Carson on preventing falls include:
Make sure you turn a light on at night to go to the bathroom.
Clear walkways and reduce clutter in your home to reduce risk of trips.
Install handrails on stairs and grabrails in the bathroom.
We also suggest getting a personal alarm system to enable you to get help in the event of a fall or medical emergency. There are a range of different types of personal alarm systems available. The team at Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy can assist with helping you choose a system that is right for your needs.
Occupational therapists are trained to assess clients for their risk of falls and provide recommendations on ways to prevent falls, such as through home modifications.
