If you or someone you care for has a disability, assistive technology (AT) can dramatically improve daily life. From mobility scooters and shower chairs to electric beds and voice-activated tools, AT can help individuals achieve independence, participate in their community, and meet their goals. But how do you access this equipment through the NDIS?

In this blog, we explain the role of occupational therapists in prescribing assistive technology, the steps involved in funding applications, and how we support clients every step of the way.

What Is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment, software, or system that supports a person with disability to:

  • Perform everyday tasks

  • Increase independence and safety

  • Improve communication, mobility, or self-care

Examples include:

  • Daily living aids (e.g. jar openers, grabbers)

  • Mobility aids (e.g. wheelchairs, scooters, walkers)

  • Bathroom equipment (e.g. commodes, shower chairs, transfer benches)

  • Beds and recliner chairs (e.g. electric adjustable beds)

  • Smart home or communication tech (e.g. switches, apps, or speech-generating devices)

How Occupational Therapists Support AT Access

Occupational therapists (OTs) are key professionals in assessing, recommending, and supporting applications for assistive technology under the NDIS. Here’s how we help:

  1. Assessment of Needs

We work with clients to understand their functional needs, environment, and goals. This includes:

  • In-clinic or home-based assessments

  • Observing how tasks are completed (e.g. showering, transferring, navigating the home)

  • Identifying barriers to independence or safety

  1. Trial and Prescription

OTs often arrange trials of different equipment to ensure it’s the right fit before recommending it. This may include:

  • Working with suppliers to arrange in-home or clinic trials

  • Customising features to the client’s needs

  • Evaluating how safe, comfortable, and functional the item is

  1. NDIS Reports and Funding Applications

We complete formal documentation required by the NDIS, including:

  • AT Assessment Reports

  • Quotes from suppliers

  • Risk Assessments (when applicable)

  • Home environment photos and diagrams

Our reports are clear, evidence-based, and aligned with NDIS requirements.

  1. Training and Setup

Once the equipment is approved, we can assist with:

  • Delivery and installation

  • Training the client and their caregivers

  • Ensuring ongoing safety and effectiveness

Types of AT Applications: Low, Mid, and High Cost

The NDIS categorises AT based on cost and complexity:

  • Low-Cost AT (<$1,500): Often doesn’t need an OT report. Your OT can advise what’s appropriate.

  • Mid-Cost AT ($1,500–$15,000): Requires a letter or short report from an OT.

  • High-Cost AT (>$15,000): Needs a full OT assessment and detailed report, including trials and risk documentation.

Our team knows what’s required at each level and ensures your submission is complete and aligned with NDIS expectations.
