What Is Pressure Care and Why Is It Important?

Pressure care refers to the prevention and management of pressure injuries—commonly known as bedsores or pressure ulcers—that occur when sustained pressure reduces blood flow to parts of the body. These injuries can develop quickly and lead to significant complications, especially in individuals with limited mobility, neurological conditions, or chronic illness.

Preventing pressure injuries is vital for maintaining skin integrity, preventing infection, and improving comfort and quality of life. For NDIS participants, older adults, and individuals with disabilities, pressure care is an essential part of maintaining independence and avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions.

Who Is at Risk of Pressure Injuries?

Anyone with reduced mobility is at increased risk of developing pressure injuries. This includes:

  • People using wheelchairs or mobility devices

  • Individuals who spend long periods in bed or recliners

  • Clients with neurological impairments such as spinal cord injuries or multiple sclerosis

  • People with reduced sensation or cognitive impairments

  • Older adults, particularly those with frail skin or poor circulation

The Occupational Therapist’s Role in Pressure Care

Occupational therapists (OTs) play a critical role in pressure care by assessing, preventing, and managing pressure injuries as part of a holistic care plan. Here’s how OTs support clients:

  1. Pressure Risk Assessment

OTs use clinical tools and observation to assess pressure injury risk. This may include skin integrity reviews, mobility assessments, and the use of validated risk assessment tools such as the Braden or Waterlow Scale.

  1. Postural and Seating Assessments

OTs complete detailed seating and positioning evaluations, which are essential for clients who use wheelchairs, recliners, or spend significant time seated. The goal is to distribute pressure evenly and reduce points of high stress.

  1. Prescription of Pressure-Relieving Equipment

Occupational therapists are trained to prescribe and recommend a wide range of assistive technology for pressure relief. This includes:

  • Pressure-relieving cushions (gel, foam, air, or hybrid)

  • Alternating air mattresses

  • Pressure-relief recliners and seating systems

  • Positioning wedges

These recommendations are tailored to each client’s needs and are often included in NDIS Assistive Technology funding applications.

  1. Education and Training

OTs educate clients, carers, and support workers on:

  • Repositioning techniques

  • Skin checks and early warning signs

  • Safe use of equipment

  • Importance of hydration and nutrition for skin health

Education is central to empowering clients to manage their care proactively.

  1. Environmental Modifications

OTs can also recommend changes to the environment—such as bed height adjustments, hoist systems, and accessible furniture—to make pressure care more manageable for clients and their carers.

How Pressure Care Is Funded Through the NDIS

The NDIS recognises pressure care as a vital health support. OTs at South Coast Therapy & Support Group can assist with:

  • Functional assessments to justify the need for equipment

  • Writing supporting letters and reports for NDIS Assistive Technology applications

  • Collaborating with suppliers and support coordinators

If a participant is at risk of pressure injuries, pressure care equipment and supports may be funded under Core Supports or Capital Supports, depending on the complexity.
