When you think of therapy, you might imagine a one-on-one session with a therapist — but did you know that Allied Health Assistants (AHAs) play a vital role in delivering effective, accessible care? At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, our AHAs are an essential part of our multidisciplinary team.
What is an Allied Health Assistant?
An Allied Health Assistant works under the guidance and supervision of qualified therapists like occupational therapists (OTs) and speech pathologists (SPs). They help implement therapy programs, deliver goal-based interventions, and support clients in clinic, school, home, or community settings.
How Do AHAs Support Clients?
AHAs extend the impact of therapy by:
Reinforcing therapy goals through structured and consistent practice
Providing additional sessions between therapist appointments to help maintain progress
Offering fun and engaging activities that build skills in real-world environments
Supporting group programs like social skills groups, school readiness, or Sense Rugby
Benefits of Working with an AHA
More consistent therapy – AHAs provide additional sessions, which can be more frequent and affordable
Improved generalisation – Skills are practised in real-life contexts like parks, homes, or classrooms
Cost-effective care – AHA sessions are funded under the NDIS and cost less per hour than therapist sessions
Increased flexibility – AHAs can visit clients at home or school, making therapy more convenient for families
Who Oversees the AHA?
Every AHA session is guided by a qualified therapist. Therapists complete assessments, write therapy plans, and regularly review the AHA’s delivery of interventions. AHAs also provide session notes and updates so that progress can be tracked.
