Starting Therapy: A Courageous First Step
Making the decision to begin therapy is a powerful act of self-care. Whether you’re seeking support for your child, yourself, or a loved one, it’s natural to feel a little uncertain about what the first session might be like. At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we aim to make the experience welcoming, informative, and empowering.
Before the Session
Once you’ve booked your initial appointment, our admin team will provide you with some basic information. You might be asked to complete an intake form to help your therapist understand your goals, background, and any current concerns. For NDIS participants, this also includes reviewing your plan goals and the support categories you’re accessing.
If your appointment is at our Nowra or Shellharbour clinics, you’ll be greeted by our friendly reception team and shown to our warm, inclusive therapy spaces. We also offer mobile services and telehealth options for added flexibility.
The First 10 Minutes: Building Comfort
Your therapist’s priority is to help you or your child feel comfortable. The first session is about connection—not pressure. You might begin with casual conversation, and your therapist will explain their role, your rights as a client, and how therapy sessions typically unfold.
If the session is for your child, they may engage in play-based activities while the therapist observes and interacts, gathering insights in a natural, low-pressure environment.
Getting to Know You
Your therapist will gently explore your history, current challenges, and what you’re hoping to achieve. For occupational therapy, this might involve discussing daily routines, sensory preferences, or fine/gross motor skills. For speech pathology, it could include communication concerns or feeding challenges.
There’s no pressure to share everything at once. Therapy is a journey, and your therapist will meet you where you’re at.
Setting Goals Together
By the end of the session, you and your therapist will likely begin setting goals. These are collaborative and based on what’s meaningful to you—whether that’s your child being able to join in at preschool, regaining independence at home after surgery, or managing anxiety more effectively.
We’ll also discuss a proposed treatment plan and frequency of sessions. You’ll have time to ask questions, clarify funding options, and understand the next steps.
After the Session
Following your session, we’ll send you a treatment plan, depending on your service type and funding requirements. We’ll also help you book follow-up appointments or planning meetings with our allied health assistants if needed.
Final Thoughts
Your first therapy session is about laying the foundation for a strong therapeutic relationship. At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we walk alongside you with compassion, evidence-based practice, and genuine care.
